Hey beautiful people! me here, coming at you with some real talk about writing BWWM romances.
You know, as a Black woman penning these stories, I’ve gotta tell you – it’s a journey. Every time I sit down to write, I’m pouring a piece of myself onto the page. It’s not just about crafting a good story; it’s about capturing the essence of experiences that are so close to my heart.
There’s this unique thrill when I’m developing characters who reflect parts of my own reality. I find myself weaving in little details – the way my late mom’s eyes used to crinkle when she tried not to laugh at one of my jokes, or how my best friend always knows when I need a shoulder to lean on without me saying a word. These little touches? They’re what breathe life into my characters.
But let me tell you, it’s not always smooth sailing. Sometimes I catch myself overthinking. Am I being true to the experience? Am I telling our stories in a way that feels real and honest? It can be a tightrope walk, y’all.
And don’t even get me started on family dynamics! Writing those scenes where my heroine brings her man home for the first time… whew! I’m drawing on every awkward family dinner, every raised eyebrow from aunties, every whispered conversation I wasn’t supposed to hear. It’s funny how those moments that made me cringe in real life turn into gold on the page.
One thing I’ve learned? Love is complex, beautiful, and sometimes messy – regardless of who’s falling for whom. But there’s something special about these love stories. They’re a celebration of two people bridging their worlds, finding common ground, and building something beautiful together.
I write these stories for us – for every Black woman who’s ever felt her heart race at a tender moment, who’s navigated cultural differences with grace (and okay, sometimes with a few stumbles), who’s dared to love fiercely and without apology.
So when you pick up one of my books, know that you’re not just reading a story. You’re reading a piece of me, a reflection of us, a celebration of love in all its complicated, wonderful glory.
What about you? What draws you to these romances? What moments make you swoon, laugh, or reach for the tissues? Drop a comment below – I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Until next time, keep loving, keep reading, and remember – our stories matter.
Peace and love,
N. Viktoria
